Advocacy: Outreach

There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.
— Margaret J. Wheatley

🌱

California Chapter members are the lifeblood of APLD. Community outreach benefits us individually as landscape designers, the communities in which we live, and the environment as a whole. This website is a springboard to reach out to and promote our members, our causes, our accomplishments, and our activities.

Who Are We, and What Do We Do?

We are dedicated to our craft. We are talented and creative. We are leaders and contributors.

We are educators, mentors, and problem solvers.

We advocate for our right to practice and for the planet.

We are communicators, always helping our clients understand the importance of regenerative landscapes.

We are collaborators. We know that the only way to influence is to reach out, so we build alliances with a broad range of agencies, companies, vendors, and like-minded individuals and organizations.

Advocacy Web Pages Reimagined

We are proud to reveal these new Advocacy web pages—the result of the extraordinary collaboration of the Website Working Group, with graphical icons by PROEspacio and coding by our Webmaster, Frank Weaver, who has worked his magic to bring this body of work to life.

This page will be our platform to highlight our districts, write “What’s New” blog posts, and feature the Advocacy Corner of the Chapter’s California Landscape Design publication.

An Advocacy Committee priority is to forge and strengthen new relationships with other organizations, such as:

Healthy Pots, Healthy Planet

APLD Healthy Pots - Healthy Planet LogoThe APLD Healthy Pots, Healthy Planet (HPHP)Initiative wants individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to share our passion in reducing plastic use in the horticultural industry. The California Chapter Advocacy Committee’s HPHP Working Group is actively involved with this APLD nationwide effort. Please sign your name to support this Initiative. To go beyond a signature, learn more about being a HPHP Ambassador.

The HPHP Initiative needs a volunteer webmaster for the website and a volunteer Social Media Coordinator. Do you have just the right skills? Please contact Toni Bailey, the HPHP Committee chair, at toni@gracefullygreen.com.

Bay Area District Holds Designer Plant Fair

The APLD 2022 Bay Area Designer Plant Fair at Ruth Bancroft Garden & NurseryAfter a two-year hiatus due to Covid, we were finally able to get together safely, out of doors at Ruth Bancroft Garden & Nursery, for our 2022 Plant Fair, held on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Thanks to all the vendors, the Ruth Bancroft Garden crew, and APLD CA Bay Area Programs Committee, we learned about new, drought-tolerant plants and their environmental requirements, while having fun in the garden!

Sacramento District Plans Forward

The Sacramento District held its annual Board retreat to plan for 2022. It was a crisp fall day and—and what better way to break out of the norm?—a landscape scavenger hunt was planned! We walked around the Curtis Park neighborhood in search of a list of elements in the landscapes (no cheating) like rainwater catchment, permeable hardscape, edibles/fruit trees, water feature, the sound of water, California native plants, etc. There were even prizes! It was a refreshing approach and a productive meeting, thanks to District President Soleil Tranquilli and Secretary Marcia Scott.

Member Collaborations

Sacramento District members are working with the City of Sacramento in their River Friendly Landscape Design Assistance Program. APLD members help to educate residents, who are often do-it-yourselfers (DIYs), about how they can create watershed-wise landscapes that build and protect healthy, living soil; capture rainwater as a resource; use climate-appropriate plants; and use highly efficient irrigation—all of which support the health of our waterways.
