Education is at the core of what the APLD California Chapter and Advocacy Committee advocate for to increase the legitimacy of our members and profession.
The Advocacy Committee’s Education Working Group has been actively working on two identified priorities relative to the environment: Regenerative and Fire-resilient Landscape Design.
Increasing wildfire danger throughout the western United States has made it urgent that California’s design professionals receive comprehensive, standardized education. Habitat loss related to urban development, climate change, and wildfires has resulted in a growing need for gardens that attract and support wildlife, especially pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
The good news is that when gardens are designed, constructed, and managed for these beautiful biodiversity ambassadors, they benefit a wide array of other wildlife as well. We should and can be part of creating these regenerative landscapes.

Sustainability at APLD.org
Sustainable Landscape Design is the design, installation and management of landscapes and landscape features which:
- Encourages, creates, and maintains a healthy and thriving environment, including providing habitat and ecosystem services, both within and outside the particular landscape; and
- Uses energy and material resources appropriately and efficiently, and contributes to conservation so that future generations will have options for the use of those resources.
