Fire-Resilient Landscape Design
Presented by landscape architect Sarah Sutton, ASLA, APLD, RQP
In the Fall of 2022 the APLD California Chapter and Advocacy Committee provided our members and industry professionals with specialized training in fire-resilient landscape design during the Slow the Burn Symposium. This follow-up video encapsulates:
- landscape design requirements for Defensible Space zones with photos of example landscapes;
- considerations for choosing plants for use in fire-resistant landscapes; and
- plant selection resources for Northern and Southern California.
The threat of wildfires in California and other states has dramatically escalated the demand for ecology-based landscapes that address issues of biodiversity collapse, water scarcity, and wildfire threat. Creating landscapes to meet these challenges requires expertise, creativity, and a collaborative workforce of professionals because—as we know—we are all in this together!
